Jean Cocteau

19 Aug

JPG Couture AW34The « Homage to Cocteau / Hommage à Cocteau » look of the surrealism-themed Jean Paul Gaultier Couture Autumn/Winter 2003-2004 Show, titled « Morphing », paid tribute to Jean Cocteau.

Other collections inspired by Jean Cocteau’s art : Bruno Pieters Autumn/Winter 2005-2006 (this collection was influenced by Jean Cocteau and Art Deco), Catherine Malandrino Autumn/Winter 2009-2010 (this show featured a pattern, showcasing 2 profiles, turning into a vase, originally designed by Jean Cocteau for Schiaparelli), Franck Sorbier Couture Spring/Summer 2007 (the « eye » strapless dress was based on Jean Cocteau), Jean-Charles de Castelbajac Pre-Fall 2014 (the starting point of this collection was a lithograph by Jean Cocteau, titled « Je me souviens de l’avenir / I remember the future »), John Galliano Spring/Summer 2011 (one outfit of this Maria Lani-inspired show evoked the portrait of Maria Lani that Jean Cocteau painted).

The extraordinary Jean Paul Gaultier calls this kind of jumpsuit an “integral”. As long as we show our heart, everything should be OK !

I think there will be a show in Dallas featuring his work.

No wonder it’s presented over there because it’s been such a successful exhibition, that it never stops touring like a true rock star (I haven’t seen it yet but the catalogue is monumental !). It will be presented in France in 2015, at Paris’ Grand Palais …

I might drag myself up there. It’s a 5 hour drive.

Thanks a lot 😄 Your post on Jean Paul Gaultier’s last show is bloody great ! Collection after collection, the genius of this stunning couturier still shines, even in the darkness !

    Amazing unitard!
Why didn’t they use a nude pair of underwear, rather than white….argh! Irritation.
This would be spectacular for a modern dance company.

It’s interesting to read your slightly irritated comment (the awesome JPG likes to emphasize underwear rather than hiding them XD) because this magnificently flamboyant couturier has often collaborated with modern dance companies ! XO

This makes me think of Frida Khalo, with the heart and capillaries all highlighted. I am a fan of both Monsieur Gaultier and the artsit, so I love this in every respect!

Thanks so much ! The beyond-amazing Jean Paul Gaultier loves Frida Kahlo so much that he dedicated a whole collection, for Spring/Summer 1998, to this extraordinary artist, whose body endured so much pain …
