The Lord of the Rings

Alexander McQueen AW1415

The hair and the makeup of the Alexander McQueen by Sarah Burton Autumn/Winter 2014-2015 Show, respectively conceived by Guido Palau and Pat McGrath, were partly influenced by J. R. R. Tolkien’s « The Lord of the Rings ».

Another « The Lord of the Rings »-inspired collection : Clements Ribeiro Autumn/Winter 2002-2003.

Furthermore, in December 2003, « British Vogue » wrote that Liv Tyler had been dressed by the late Alexander McQueen for 3 premieres of « The Lord of the Rings » film series.

The Divine Comedy

Damien Hirst X Alexander McQueen 13

To celebrate the 10th anniversary of Alexander McQueen’s « Skull » scarf, Alexander McQueen launches today the Damien Hirst X Alexander McQueen capsule collection, originally based upon Dante Alighieri’s « The Divine Comedy », which features 30 unique creations adapted from Damien Hirst’s « Entomology » series.

Other « The Divine Comedy »-inspired collections : Alexander McQueen Autumn/Winter 1996-1997 (this collection was titled « Dante »), Olympia Le-Tan (in January 2012, Olympia Le-Tan unveiled a collection influenced by Italian literary classics, which included a clutch with an embroidered motif of the cover of Dante Alighieri’s « The Divine Comedy » book, as part of a project as guest designer of Florence’s Pitti W trade fair), Rachel Frank (the collection that Rachel Frank presented, in May 2008, when she was a student at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, was a tribute to Dante Alighieri’s « The Divine Comedy »).

To read about Damien Hirst-inspired collections or collaborations, and about collections with skulls, search for the « Damien Hirst » and « Skulls » posts that I have respectively published on April 14, 2012 and on October 31, 2012.

Other Lee Miller-inspired collections : Bally by Michael Herz and Graeme Fidler Autumn/Winter 2013-2014 (the coats were based on Lee Miller’s), Bibhu Mohapatra Autumn/Winter 2013-2014 (Man Ray’s images of muses such as Lee Miller influenced this collection), Bruno Pieters Autumn/Winter 2005-2006 (the ’20s-styled hair of this show was an homage to Lee Miller), Carven by Guillaume Henry Autumn/Winter 2011-2012 (Lee Miller was one of the muses of this collection), Gucci by Frida Giannini Autumn/Winter 2007-2008 (the vintage-influenced pieces of this show took inspiration from a biography of Lee Miller), Sonia Rykiel Pre-Fall 2012 (this surrealism-themed collection paid tribute, among other things, to Man Ray’s photograph of Lee Miller’s mouth in « Observatory Time – The Lovers »).

Corinne Day

Alexander McQueen Resort 14

The carefree youth which was portrayed in Corinne Day’s photograph of a topless Kate Moss, in an American Indian headdress (for the July 1990 cover of « The Face »), was the starting point of the Alexander McQueen by Sarah Burton Resort 2014 Collection.

Other Corinne Day-inspired collections : Altuzarra Autumn/Winter 2011-2012 (this show paid homage to the ’90s grunge aesthetic immortalized by photographers such as Corinne Day), Diesel Black Gold by Sophia Kokosalaki Spring/Summer 2013 (this collection was partly influenced by the aesthetic of Corinne Day’s images for « The Face »), Gabrielle Greiss Spring/Summer 2012 (Corinne Day’s shots were among the references of this collection), Jill Stuart Resort 2013 (this collection was based on Corinne Day’s work for « The Face »), Meadham Kirchhoff Autumn/Winter 2010-2011 (Corinne Day’s ’90s work was one of the inspirations of this show), Preen by Thornton Bregazzi Spring/Summer 2010 (the program of this show mentioned Corinne Day’s early ’90s photographs).
