André Saraiva

Louis Vuitton X André SS14

The « Monogram » shawl that André Saraiva has revisited for Louis Vuitton, as part of the « Foulards d’artistes / artist scarves » Spring/Summer 2014 Collection, is inspired by the drop cloth and the splatters of paint in his studio.

A few André Saraiva’s collaborations : Faith Connexion (André Saraiva shot the lookbook of Annabelle Dexter-Jones’ Spring/Summer 2012 collection for Faith Connexion), Galeries Lafayette (André Saraiva, shot by Jean-Paul Goude, stars in the Galeries Lafayette « L’Homme » Spring/Summer 2014 campaign), André Saraiva X Maison Kitsuné (André Saraiva designed a capsule collection, to celebrate the « Dream Concerts Art Show », dedicated to his artworks of his dream concerts, at Tokyo’s Maison Kitsuné, from September 4 until October 3rd, 2013), Levi’s® X Mr André (André Saraiva created a capsule collection for Levi’s®, which was launched on June 14, 2012), Louis Vuitton (to celebrate the reopening of the Villa Louis Vuitton in Saint-Tropez, on June 18, 2010, André Saraiva illustrated 30 portfolios and 10 drawings which were exhibited, then sold from June 25, 2010), Saint James® (André Saraiva revisited Saint James’® « Naval II » nautical top, available at Colette from July 14, 2011, which he originally created to dress the team of New York’s Le Bain club).

Louis Vuitton SS14

The Stephen Jones-designed headpieces of the Louis Vuitton by Marc Jacobs Spring/Summer 2014 Show were a nod to the creations that Bob Mackie designed for Cher, to celebrate « the showgirl in all of us » (the motif that covered Edie Campbell’s body revisited the « Graffiti » pattern that Stephen Sprouse created for the Louis Vuitton by Marc Jacobs Spring/Summer 2001 Collection).

Other Cher-influenced collections : Charlie by Matthew Zink Spring/Summer 2012 (this swimwear line channeled Cher « bursting into the Rainbow Room »), Gucci by Tom Ford Spring/Summer 1999 (this « Californian hippie cool » collection, made in collaboration with Francisco Costa, was an homage to Cher), Proenza Schouler Autumn/Winter 2011-2012 (the half-plaited ponytails of this show, styled by Paul Hanlon for Frédéric Fekkai, referenced ’70s muses such as Cher), Roberto Cavalli Spring/Summer 2004 (this show opened with screen projections which featured stills and video clips of Cher, especially in the ’70s).

To read about Stephen Sprouse-inspired collections, search for the « Stephen Sprouse » post that I published on November 9, 2012.

The Night Porter

Louis Vuitton AW1112

Charlotte Rampling in Liliana Cavani’s « The Night Porter » influenced the fetishistic theme of the Louis Vuitton by Marc Jacobs Autumn/Winter 2011-2012 Show.

Other « The Night Porter »-inspired collections : Moschino Autumn/Winter 2011-2012 (« Vogue »’s Mark Holgate wrote that this collection looked like Charlotte Rampling’s Lucia Atherton from « The Night Porter » who had been playing in the S&M fancy-dress box again), Thakoon Spring/Summer 2009 (« British Vogue »’s Leisa Barnett wrote that this collection featured « The Night Porter »–esque leather bra tops).

The Bride Wore Black

Louis Vuitton Pre-Fall 13

The Louis Vuitton by Julie de Libran Pre-Fall 2013 Collection was influenced by François Truffaut’s « The Bride Wore Black », which was an adaptation of Cornell Woolrich’s eponymous novel.

Other « The Bride Wore Black »-inspired collections : Holly Fulton Spring/Summer 2010 (this collection was partly based on Jeanne Moreau’s black and white wardrobe in « The Bride Wore Black »), Vera Wang Autumn/Winter 2010-2011 (this collection, influenced by film noir, was named after « The Bride Wore Black »).

The Louis Vuitton by Julie de Libran Resort 2013 Collection is based on Catherine Deneuve’s elegant and sensual style in such films as François Truffaut’s « Mississippi Mermaid ».

Moreover, Suno’s Max Osterweis confided his love for François Truffaut’s « Mississippi Mermaid » in the mood board that was published on the « Vogue » site, on May 11, 2011.

Jake and Dinos Chapman

Louis Vuitton AW1314 MenswearKim Jones commissioned Jake and Dinos Chapman to produce images, including the one used for this «Snow Leopard» sweater (and a floral print dubbed «Garden in Hell»), for the Louis Vuitton Autumn/Winter 2013-2014 Menswear Show.

Some Jake and Dinos Chapman’s collaborations: Alexander McQueen (Alexander McQueen collaborated with the Chapman Brothers), Stella McCartney Spring/Summer 2009 (Jake and Dinos Chapman designed the backdrop of this show).

Some designers who adore the leopard motif : Christian Dior (the couturier dared to use the leopard print in his show, on February 12, 1947, to symbolize a wild glamour ; the couturier had obtained the exclusivity of this motif, that he called « jungle », from Bianchini-Férier), Dolce & Gabbana (indissociable from the brand, this motif has been revisited by the designers after they admired pictures of ’50s and ’60s glamorous actresses ; confessing that this motif was so common that it could be seen as a color, for Spring/Summer 2007, they unveiled the « Animalier » accessories line, which was entirely dedicated to the leopard print), John Galliano (the designer said, in the March 2007 issue of « L’Officiel », that the leopard motif was part of his DNA), Roberto Cavalli (the leopard motif has been used many times in the designer’s collections and show sets).

American Psycho

Louis Vuitton SS4 MenswearChristian Bale’s impeccable style in Mary Harron’s « American Psycho » influenced the Louis Vuitton by Marc Jacobs Spring/Summer 2004 Menswear Show.

Other « American Psycho »-inspired collections : Cushnie et Ochs Spring/Summer 2009 (the body-hugging pieces evoked a perverse sexuality like the one which was highlighted in « American Psycho »), Umit Benan Autumn/Winter 2011-2012 Menswear (Patrick Bateman, the character portrayed by Christian Bale, was the starting point of this collection).

Richard Prince

Louis Vuitton SS8Richard Prince’s « Nurse » paintings (« Dude Ranch Nurse » and « Man-Crazy Nurse ») inspired the nurses of the Louis Vuitton by Marc Jacobs Spring/Summer 2008 Show, a collection Richard Prince collaborated on (especially for the « Monogram Jokes » bags, inspired by his « Jokes » paintings, the « Cartoon Firebird » bags, and the invitation cards ; furthermore, the « SpongeBob » small case that Marc Jacobs was carrying for his salute was a reference to Richard Prince’s « SpongeBob » paintings, on the back of checks, and the vintage yellow Dodge car which appeared in that collection’s Mert Alas & Marcus Piggott-shot campaign, alongside Naomi Campbell, Eva Herzigova, Angela Lindvall, Claudia Schiffer, Stephanie Seymour and Natalia Vodianova, referenced a Richard Prince’s installation).

Some Richard Prince’s collaborations : Comme des Garçons (in 2003, Comme des Garçons launched some T-shirts printed with pictures of Richard Prince’s works, in collaboration with the Sadie Coles HQ gallery, in London), Fendi (in 2008, Richard Prince customized a « Baguette » bag), Marni by Consuelo Castiglioni Spring/Summer 2007 (some prints were commissioned from Richard Prince).
