Constantin Brancusi

JCDC SS14The « faces » motifs of the Jean-Charles de Castelbajac Spring/Summer 2014 Show, drawn by the designer, evoke Constantin Brancusi’s sculptures.

Other Constantin Brancusi-influenced collections or items : Antonio Berardi Autumn/Winter 2007-2008 (the show notes mentioned Constantin Brancusi), Behnaz Sarafpour Autumn/Winter 2011-2012 (this collection referenced Constantin Brancusi’s sculptures), Calvin Klein Collection by Francisco Costa Spring/Summer 2005 (the column dresses were based on Constantin Brancusi’s shapes), Casadei Spring/Summer 2009 (for this footwear line, Cesare Casadei took inspiration from Constantin Brancusi’s sculptures), Giambattista Valli Spring/Summer 2010 (Constantin Brancusi was one of the artists that Giambattista Valli mentioned backstage), Giorgio Armani (the bottles of the « Armani / Privé » fragrances, launched in December 2004, were based on Constantin Brancusi’s sculptures), Guerlain (the Lorenz Bäumer-designed « Rouge G » lipstick, released on April 1st, 2009, was partly inspired by Constantin Brancusi), Haider Ackermann Spring/Summer 2011 (the Eugene Souleiman-styled chignons of this show paid tribute to Constantin Brancusi), Jonathan Saunders Autumn/Winter 2008-2009 (Constantin Brancusi was the starting point of this show), Lady Gaga (the egg-shaped bottle of her perfume, « Fame », designed by Lady Gaga and Nick Knight, and launched on August 22, 2012, was influenced by Constantin Brancusi’s masterpieces), Maiyet Pre-Fall 2013 (the curves of Constantin Brancusi’s minimal sculptures influenced this collection), Peter Som Autumn/Winter 2012-2013 (some fabric mixes were partly based on Constantin Brancusi’s works), Salvatore Ferragamo by Cristina Ortiz Spring/Summer 2010 (Constantin Brancusi’s busts were referenced in this Africa-themed show), Stéphane Rolland Couture Spring/Summer 2009 (partly), Victoria Beckham Spring/Summer 2011 (the column dresses of this show were inspired by Constantin Brancusi’s sculptures).

Furthermore, Constantin Brancusi’s art was highlighted in the February-March 1999 issue of Trussardi’s International Review of Art and Culture, « Cahiers d’Art / Collezione MODA/I », which juxtaposed Constantin Brancusi’s most famous sculptures, such as « The Endless Column », and Trussardi-designed pieces.

Moreover, Karl Lagerfeld once said : « facebook® is a flawless object ; for me it’s like a Brancusi ».

Fernand Léger

Andrew Gn SS14 Fernand Léger

Fernand Léger’s 1926 « Blue Guitar and Vase » painting was one of the inspirations of the Andrew Gn Spring/Summer 2014 Show, titled « The Peggy Guggenheim Collection ».

Other Fernand Léger-influenced collections : Alexis Bittar Autumn/Winter 2011-2012 (Fernand Léger’s paintings were referenced in this jewelry collection), John Galliano Spring/Summer 2011 (one outfit of this show, which was an homage to Maria Lani, evoked the portrait of Maria Lani that Fernand Léger painted), Louise Gray Autumn/Winter 2012-2013 (some motifs were based on Fernand Léger’s work).

Moreover, Yves Saint Laurent, who owned Fernand Léger’s masterpieces in his art collection, also drew inspiration from the French painter.

To read about other Peggy Guggenheim-inspired collections, search for the « Peggy Guggenheim » post that I published on April 4, 2013.
