Beauty and the Beast

JPG Couture AW67

The surrealism-inspired Jean Paul Gaultier Couture Autumn/Winter 2006-2007 Show (whose 32nd look, « Médée », reinterpreted the « Skeleton Dress » that Elsa Schiaparelli made in collaboration with Salvador Dalí) paid homage to Jean Cocteau’s « Beauty and the Beast / La Belle et la Bête ».

Other « Beauty and the Beast »-influenced campaigns, collection, items or windows : Custo Barcelona Autumn/Winter 2013-2014 (this show, titled « Beauty and the Best », drew inspiration from « Beauty and the Beast »), Dior (the TV ad for the « Poison » fragrance, directed in 1985 by Claude Chabrol and Tyen, reimagined « Beauty and the Beast » ; the TV campaign for the « Pure Poison » perfume, directed in 2004 by Jean-Baptiste Mondino and John Galliano, also took inspiration from Jean Cocteau’s romantic fantasy film), Diptyque (in September 2009, Diptyque launched 2 candles, illustrated by Kuntzel + Deygas, which paid tribute to « Beauty and the Beast »), Galeries Lafayette (to celebrate the 2014 release of Christophe Gans’ « Beauty and the Beast » remake, the Galeries Lafayette Haussmann, in Paris, displayed several « Beauty and the Beast »-themed Christmas windows, which were unveiled in November 2013).

Salvador Dalí

Salvador Dalí inspired the lip prints in the Moschino Spring/Summer 2004 Show.

Some Salvador Dalí-inspired collections and items or Salvador Dalí’s collaborations : Azzaro (the « ring » bottle of the « Azzaro Couture » perfume, launched in 1974, was inspired by a Salvador Dalí’s painting), Dries Van Noten Spring/Summer 2006 Menswear (« Salvador Dalí at the beach » was the theme of this collection), Emilio Pucci by Christian Lacroix Spring/Summer 2005 (Salvador Dalí’s voice was on the soundtrack), Jean Paul Gaultier Couture Autumn/Winter 2006-2007 (« The Surrealists », inspired in part by Salvador Dalí), Lancel (in the 70s, Lancel launched the « Dalígramme »-print « Dalí » bags, inspired by the « Dalígramas » love alphabet Salvador Dalí dedicated to Gala ; the « Dalígramme » Collection was re-released, in collaboration with the Fundacio Gala-Salvador Dalí, for Autumn/Winter 2011-2012 and Spring/Summer 2012), Mary Katrantzou Autumn/Winter 2010-2011 (some prints evoked Salvador Dalí), Schiaparelli (Salvador Dalí’s « lobster » telephone inspired the « lobster » print on a dress of the Schiaparelli 1937 Collection, and Salvador Dalí created accessories for Schiaparelli from 1936, especially a « shoe » hat, and, in 1945, the bottle of Schiaparelli’s « Roy Soleil » perfume), Sonia Rykiel Pre-Fall 2012 (collection inspired by surrealism, including Salvador Dalí’s « Mae West Lips Sofa »).

Moreover, Salvador Dalí illustrated the cover of the June 1, 1939 issue of « Vogue », and Delfina Delettrez confessed in the July 2012 issue of « British Vogue » that, as a young girl, she was transfixed by Luis Buñuel’s short film, « Un Chien Andalou », co-written and directed with Salvador Dalí.
