Fernand Léger

Fernand Léger’s 1926 « Blue Guitar and Vase » painting was one of the inspirations of the Andrew Gn Spring/Summer 2014 Show, titled « The Peggy Guggenheim Collection ».

Other Fernand Léger-influenced collections : Alexis Bittar Autumn/Winter 2011-2012 (Fernand Léger’s paintings were referenced in this jewelry collection), John Galliano Spring/Summer 2011 (one outfit of this show, which was an homage to Maria Lani, evoked the portrait of Maria Lani that Fernand Léger painted), Louise Gray Autumn/Winter 2012-2013 (some motifs were based on Fernand Léger’s work).

Moreover, Yves Saint Laurent, who owned Fernand Léger’s masterpieces in his art collection, also drew inspiration from the French painter.

Grease

Randal Kleiser’s « Grease » influenced the « Dancing with the Stars »-style Jean Paul Gaultier Spring/Summer 2014 Show.

Other « Grease »-inspired collections : Jean Paul Gaultier Spring/Summer 1979 (titled « Grease », this collection paid homage to Randal Kleiser’s eponymous film), Yazbukey Spring/Summer 2012 (this line of accessories, dubbed « Le Pussycat Fight », was partly based on « Grease »).

Whipped cream

Whipped cream inspired the James Pecis-styled wigs of the Manish Arora Spring/Summer 2014 Show, which paid homage to Josephine Baker.

Satyricon

Federico Fellini’s « Satyricon » was one of the inspirations of the Dolce & Gabbana Spring/Summer 2014 Show.

Furthermore, Dolce & Gabbana contributed to the restored version of « Satyricon », which opened the New York Film Festival, on October 13, 2012.

Tahiti

Various prints of the Aquilano.Rimondi Spring/Summer 2014 Show were based on Tahiti as seen on Paul Gauguin’s paintings.

Other Tahiti-inspired collections or items : Ascher London (in 1946, Henri Matisse’s « Océanie, La Mer » print, based on his memories of his 1940 trip to Tahiti, was reproduced on 30 scarves, that were released as part of the « Ascher Artist Squares Project »), Céline by Michael Kors Spring/Summer 2004 (the motifs of this collection referenced Tahiti’s vegetation), Issa Resort 2010 (Tahiti influenced the abstract patterns of this collection), Proenza Schouler Resort 2010 (Lazaro Hernandez and Jack McCollough took inspiration from their then-recent voyage to Tahiti), Richard Nicoll Spring/Summer 2010 (the prints were based on early photographs of Tahiti), Trussardi by Milan Vukmirovic Spring/Summer 2011 (for this collection, Milan Vukmirovic drew inspiration from David Bailey’s photographs of Marie Helvin in Tahiti).

To pay homage to West Africa, avocados are referenced on the prints, made in collaboration with the International Trade Center by women who live in villages in Burkina Faso, of the Stella Jean Spring/Summer 2014 Show.

Sicily’s Greece-inflected mythology influenced the Dolce & Gabbana Spring/Summer 2014 Show.

Some Greece-inspired collections : Alexander McQueen Spring/Summer 2006 (the « night » section of this show was based on Greek goddesses), Dolce & Gabbana Spring/Summer 2014 Menswear (this collection references Sicily’s interaction with Greece in the ancient world), Emanuel Ungaro by Giambattista Valli Spring/Summer 2005 (this Sirtaki-inspired show paid homage to the Greek costume), Emilio Pucci by Peter Dundas Spring/Summer 2011 (in part), Grès (since 1941, Grès has often presented draped clothes which take inspiration from Ancient Greece’s goddesses), Jean Paul Gaultier Couture Spring/Summer 2006 (« Homage to Greece / Hommage à la Grèce » collection), Kaufmanfranco Resort 2014 (this collection showcases a modern version of Jacqueline Onassis in the Greek islands), Marco De Vincenzo Spring/Summer 2010 (this collection paid tribute to the Olympic Games in Ancient Greece), Marios Schwab Spring/Summer 2009 (this collection spotlighted various reinterpretations of the chiton), Marios Schwab Resort 2014 (this collection highlights a shoulder line that is based on the costumes of Greek peasants), Nina Ricci by Peter Copping Resort 2011 (this collection was slightly influenced by Jacqueline Onassis’ ’60s Greek period), Sophia Kokosalaki Autumn/Winter 2010-2011 (some pieces echoed the natural shapes of the Greek landscape), Versace Spring/Summer 2011 (partly), Vionnet by Goga Ashkenazi Autumn/Winter 2013-2014 (the scenography of this show referenced Ancient Greece).
